09 Jun House Tour: Light and airy beach house on beautiful Martha’s Vineyard
Crafted by Jill Neubauer Architect together with builder Billy Reagan, this bright and airy beach house is nestled in the historic town of Oak Bluffs, on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. To comply with perplexing historic and conservation permitting requirements, the architects decided to demolish the original home on the property.
Utilizing the previous home’s footprint, a two-story dwelling was built in its place. Ultimately, the project team crafted a new structure with a moderately historical referential exterior. Step inside and you will find a light-filled interior, featuring large contemporary living spaces and expansive views of Vineyard Sound.
The homeowner enjoys entertaining large groups of family and friends in a casual environment. The material selections throughout this house speak to this informality. This includes raw stone and concrete fireplaces, poured concrete floors, and movable hydraulic kitchen work surfaces that convert to dining tables. Random-width red cedar walls add a rustic richness, contrasting with the contemporary concrete and stone elements.
What We Love: This Martha’s Vineyard beach house offers warm and inviting living spaces complimented by breathtaking ocean views. The styling of this home reflects casual and comfortable furnishings for both family living and entertaining. We are especially loving the kitchen, which can accommodate up to 20 dinner guests! Even though this home has a narrow footprint, it makes full use of all available space. We can imagine this would be a fantastic home to enjoy summer getaways in a place that is steeped in history.

Above: This island/table was custom built on Cape Cod by CorMetals. The island countertop is simply three layers of maple cabinet plywood, stained, and sealed with an oil based urethane. The chairs surrounding the island/table were a flea market find! Above the range is a backsplash of stainless steel surrounded by glass tile. Halo H2320 and WAC Tube 6″ High Bronze have very similar light fixtures as the ones featured in this kitchen. The kitchen offers 264 square feet, roughly 12 by 22 feet.
