02 Jun This Washington home gets transformed into a light filled modern oasis
SKB Architects has transformed a home built in the early 1990s into a modern oasis for family living, situated in Medina, Washington. The new homeowners were attracted to the natural terrain and sweeping views of Lake Washington. Consisting of 3,800 square feet of living space, the remodel included a new kitchen, pantry, and laundry area off of the kitchen as well as the renovation of the master bedroom suite.
All of the exterior windows, roofing, and finishes were also updated. Due to a lack of maintenance over the years, the home required extensive work, this entailed: new roofs, exterior siding, electrical, plumbing, and windows and doors. Additionally, the home had a very dated aesthetic and the client was interested in modernizing it to be more of an abstract, sleek, and current design.
The overall design reflects a modern and minimal aesthetic, with innovative touches throughout and a strong indoor-outdoor connection.
The design solution involved opening up the kitchen and adding a pantry just off of it. A powder bathroom was also designed just adjacent to this space. A floating island and wall of glass opposite, brings focus to the outdoors, as well as back into a small breakfast/family area.
All of the main level windows were replaced with large, single fixed windows that were strategically on the axis to all the focal points of the exterior landscape.
Next to these windows are hidden doors in the wall, which enable access to the yard.
The volumes of the exterior architectural forms were also abstracted by removing all embellishments from them and applying a simple white stucco surface.
What We Love: Expansive windows throughout this light-filled modern oasis enhance the indoor-outdoor experience. The living room is the social core of this dwelling, it breaks up the monotony of the overall minimalist scheme with its exquisite, dual-sided fireplace. Spaces seem to flow from one to the next thanks to the thoughtful renovation of the floor plan where spaces are now open to each other.

The updated layout now exudes a gallery-like ambiance, highlighting the owner’s art collection and replacing a luminous interior with what was originally dark.
The main living area is the central focal point, which seamlessly connects the house with the outdoors, extending from the front to the back and out to the pool.
